If you have always wanted to take a trip on the Trans-Siberian railway, you may be wondering when the best time is to go. There’s no right or wrong answer, it really depends on what you want to experience.
Weather and Seasons
1. Russia
In Russia, the summer days run from late May to early September and are long and warm. In fact, right in the middle of summer, there is no real darkness in St Petersburg and average temperatures tend to range from around 18 – 25 degrees. Autumn is fairly short and over by the end of October, when winter starts to set in and with that comes plenty of snow. Spring brings everything to life around late March.
2. Mongolia
Mongolia has four noticeable seasons with winter running from November through to February, and summer stretching from August to September. Consult The Trans-Siberian Travel Company about your preferred seasons, however, summer tends to be the peak travel season when the weather is just right. November brings with it incredibly cold, dry months, with loads of snow.
3. China
One of the best times to visit Beijing has got to be during the autumn months of September to November, when skies are clear. Winter runs from late November through to February and tends to get cold and windy with a little snow.

When is the Best Time to Travel on the Railway?
Grab a copy of a travel guide by Chris Plumb and decide when you want to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The below tips may help, too.
During the Summer
The various trains that make up the journey depart all throughout the year. Travelling during the summer does mean longer, hotter days, but it is ideal for sightseeing in the different cities and wondering around Lake Baikal. Keep in mind that the trains are air conditioned, so on-board temperatures are not a problem. If you prefer to travel light and with fewer layers of clothes, this is a great time to go.
During the Winter
Many travellers prefer to spot the frost on the windows as they huddle down with a sip or two of vodka and watch the snow pile up. In winter, the temperatures tend to drop below freezing, and snow is usually spotted in Mongolia, Russia, and northern China. The trains, though, are heated and there is plenty of snuggling bedding to keep you warm. It’s also the perfect time to try activities like ice skating on Lake Baikal or dog sledding.
During Spring and Autumn
These months have loads to offer with beautiful flowers beginning to bloom and lighting up the countryside. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy during these months.
Events and Festivals
The Trans-Siberian railway stretches across 10,000km of extreme landscapes, but what makes the journey special is what you get to see and do along the trip. Each city has loads to offer, and there are always events and festivals to experience. Be sure to check the calendar before you set off.
