Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year, and the one season I actually bother adjusting my home decor for. Sunday was spent shopping at Michael’s (and Homegoods, TJMaxx, Target, etc) for holiday decor, and I was able to put together a festive floral arrangement for our foyer.

Yes, it took me just around 10 minutes to put this holiday decor together. I’m no flower arrangement master, but here are some of my tips:
- Pick no more than 3 colors
Think about the color scheme, and select 2-3 focal colors (green doesn’t count!). You might be able to get away with more, but I find 2-3 usually looks best. For Christmas, I was deciding between white, red, gold, and silver, and ultimately I went with white & red. If I threw in gold AND silver, it wouldn’t look as cohesive overall. - Think about the container/vase you’re using
The shape of your container will determine the number AND type of flowers used. Since mine was a tall narrow vase, I chose just 3 blooming flowers and the rest were accent florals/greens. If I had a wider shorter container I would select more blooms and different accents. - Pick pieces of varying height
Regardless of container size and shape, you want your arrangement to have dimensions. Usually I find the taller pieces are your accent florals/greens. The main blooms should fall right in the middle in order to draw the eye to the center of the arrangement. You can have several shorter pieces (like my pinecone), but limit those because they’ll mostly be hidden by the rest of the arrangement. - Accent pieces are just as important
You can have an arrangement with just blooming florals, but accent pieces can give it that extra oomph it needs. They make your blooms stand out even more and add balance to the overall look. In this arrangement I actually have more accent pieces than blooms! - Be creative with the filling
Craft water and marble accents are common vase fillers, but they’re not your only options. For a festive twist and a nice scent, I used some red and white potpourri. Depending on the height of your pieces, you might put the fillings in first or last. For my arrangement I put in my taller blooms, added some potpourri, added my shorter pieces, then added the rest of the potpourri.
My favorite places to shop for fake flowers is Michael’s, and they’re having a 50% off sale for flowers + additional 25% off entire purchase! You can find potpourri and vases pretty much anywhere, I just happened to get mine at HomeGood’s.

I love Christmas and any excuse to decorate the house. These are lovely floral decorations. I love poinsettia the are so pretty Lucy x
Thanks Lucy! Christmas is my favorite holiday and the only time of the year I switch up my decor :)
This is fantastic, it looks stunning! The colours you’ve picked are so festive too, excellent choices! I’m lacking it the creative flair to do something as pretty as this, but with these tips I’m willing to give it a go!
Thank you! It was so difficult deciding on the color scheme at Michaels – gold + red would’ve been beautiful too!
The floral arrangement came out great! It’s pretty and perfect for the holiday season :) Good tips too! I tend to only use a couple colors. I find it’s hard to get a good balance when you have too many. I agree that the accent pieces are important too.
I made a few for my house and have been meaning to do more. I’ve been buying my flowers at Joann because I’m usually there for something else already (like fabric). They tend to have a lot of sales and coupons too!
Thank you Cat! I didn’t know Joann sold flowers too – I thought they just carried fabrics O: There’s one nearby my house that I’ll have to checkout from now on :)
This is super cute! I am getting excited to decorate my flat even though I am the only person who will see it and I’m going away for Christmas, haha.

Thank you Aisling! We don’t have many guests over either, but it makes me (and my husband…I think, haha) happy when I see the festive decor, so that’s all that matters :P
Ahh! I can’t wait to start decorating for the holidays. I typically start the day after Thanksgiving (a family tradition of mine).

Most people do start after Thanksgiving, but I couldn’t wait! Plus I didn’t have any Thanksgiving or fall decorations up, but I figured why not ;)
